State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond today announced that 408 middle schools and high schools have been selected for the prestigious 2026 California Distinguished Schools Program, California’s school recognition program that recognizes exceptional schools that distinguish themselves on the basis of exemplary student outcomes.
Congratulations to the entire Taft Charter High School community! We are thrilled to announce that Taft has been officially recognized as a 2026 California Distinguished School by the California Department of Education.
Since its inception in 1985, the California Distinguished Schools Award has remained one of the state’s most important ways to celebrate exceptional schools, districts, teachers, and classified employees for their innovation, talent, and success in supporting students. The 2026 California Distinguished Schools, along with 2025 California Blue Ribbon Schools, 2026 Green Achievers, 2026 Exemplary Dual Enrollment Award Schools, and 2025 Civic Learning Awards of Excellence, will be recognized at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim on April 24, 2026.
Taft CHS received this recognition in 2022, 2024, and 2026. This prestigious award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our students, teachers, staff, and families. State Superintendent Tony Thurmond selected Taft for this honor based on our exceptional student performance and our commitment to closing the achievement gap. As one of only 408 secondary schools in the state to receive this distinction, we are incredibly proud of our collective success in fostering an environment where every student can excel.
