Gifted STEAM Magnet Program - Home
Taft Charter High School's Gifted STEAM Magnet is a rigorous, college-preparatory program designed for motivated students who thrive in an accelerated academic environment. Since its establishment in 2016, the program has grown into a comprehensive 9–12 pathway that challenges students to think critically, solve complex problems, and apply their learning through authentic, real-world experiences.
As a designated Gifted/Highly Gifted/High Ability (G/HG/HA) Magnet, our program serves students who demonstrate the ability to perform significantly above grade level and who are ready for enriched, advanced coursework. Through a combination of academic rigor, hands-on learning, leadership development, and community engagement, students are prepared for success in college, careers, and beyond.
Academic Excellence
Gifted STEAM Magnet students advance through high school as part of a supportive academic cohort while pursuing individualized pathways aligned with their interests and goals. Coursework emphasizes interdisciplinary learning, creativity, innovation, and collaboration across the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics.
Students may pursue specialized coursework and career pathways in:
- Computer Science
- Engineering Design
A typical incoming 9th-grade schedule may include:
- Introduction to Engineering Design or AP Computer Science Principles
- Honors English 9
- Honors Biology or AP Biology
- Algebra I, Honors Geometry, Honors Algebra II, or higher-level mathematics based on placement
- World Language (American Sign Language, French, Korean, or Spanish)
- Physical Education / Team Sports
Students work closely with counselors to develop a four-year academic plan that supports their individual strengths, interests, and post-secondary goals.
Beyond the Classroom
At Taft, learning extends far beyond traditional coursework. Students are encouraged to apply their knowledge through leadership opportunities, competitions, service-learning projects, research experiences, and community partnerships.
Leadership & Student Voice
Students have numerous opportunities to develop leadership skills and make a meaningful impact on campus and beyond through programs such as:
- Magnet Mentors, our student ambassador and leadership program
- TEDxYouth at Taft, a student-led conference that empowers students to share ideas and inspire change
- Student-led clubs and organizations
- District and regional leadership conferences and presentations
Our students are encouraged to become advocates, innovators, and changemakers in their communities.
Innovation & STEAM Experiences
Gifted STEAM Magnet students participate in a wide variety of hands-on learning opportunities and competitions, including:
- Robotics and engineering design challenges
- Hydrogen fuel cell vehicle competitions
- Cybersecurity and computer science competitions
- Bridge-building competitions
- Esports and emerging technology experiences
- Research and project-based learning opportunities
These experiences allow students to collaborate, innovate, and apply classroom knowledge to real-world challenges.
